One question I’m asked a lot is “how do I know if my license is suspended in New Orleans and what steps do I need to take?” It’s a big question and without being a traffic ticket attorney, it can be an overwhelming system to get answers.
The first place to go check if you are a Louisiana residence is www.expresslane.org. You can enter your license number and the last four digits of your social security number. Expresslane.org does a good job of showing you what flags may be holding your license back. However, it is not a complete one stop shop. Some flags may not show up on the system and out of state tickets may not either.
If you find out you have flags on your license, each flag requires some research for how to resolve the ticket.
You can do this on your own and it starts by contacting each court related to each flag on the license. If you only have one flag on your record, it can be easy enough to get your court date, discuss with the clerk and judge how to resolve the issue, and pay the fine. If you have more than a citation or two, hiring a traffic ticket attorney who knows how to work within the court system can be a huge savings of time and money. In general, more than one ticket will require more than one trip to the DMV, court, or elsewhere.
